Hundreds of thousands down, one to go. After months of tedious fluff, shocking revelations, and hours of oversinging, American Idol’s grand finale is here.
Finalists Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks will take the stage Tuesday and Wednesday in order to try and become the next Taylor Hicks. OK, more like the next Kelly Clarkson. And judging from these two contestants’ style, singing, and personalities, both stand the chance to make it to Clarkson’s level, which is the reason why the glorious Melinda Doolittle was sent packing.
I shed a tear along with the rest of America, and wondered why the 29-year-old Tina Turner-like superstar with a heart of gold that could sing circles around the other two said goodbye that night.
But the reason was very clear. Teens, tweens, and Sanjaya lovers wanted to watch more of a 17-year-old curly-haired America Ferrera-look alike and a 25-year-old Justin Timberlake wannabe.
It’s no secret that moms, dads and vocal coaches aren’t the ones clicking away at their computer screens. American Idol isn’t about talent folks, it’s about popularity, so let’s weigh in on who’s taking home the gold, or microphone, or whatever it is that symbolizes a recording contract.
Blake Lewis - The goods: The young beatboxer has beatboxed his way into the hearts of millions even if many predicted his departure last week. Teenage girls think he’s cute. He’s got the Timberlake fashion sense and can rock argyle sweaters and different hair colors without looking like an idiot. Lewis has also made several good song choices and accomplished the unthinkable by beatboxing to Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” and making it sound good.
The bads: After updating Bon Jovi’s hit, he followed his performance by updating every song he’s sung with his beatboxing, including the Bee Gees “You Should Be Dancing.” Lewis needs to put an end to the beatboxing, and stick to the contemporary stuff.
Jordin Sparks - The goods: The bouncy teen is the best friend all girls wish they had. She’s funny, down-to-earth, not all skin and bones and looks like the kind of girl that would never laugh if you ever spill punch on your favorite shirt. Sparks definitely has the talent and was the only contestant that could sometimes measure up to Doolittle’s vocals.
The bads: She’s not a heartthrob like Lewis and has been known to make terrible choices like Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
Who will take the top spot? Tune in to the 2-day finale on Fox on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 8 p.m. My vote is for Blake.
