Friday marked the beginning of the first annual South Padre International Music Festival. It was also the first time I’ve ever done an on-camera interview with a band. Needless to say, I was nervous as hell. I’ve been to many festivals throughout my life, but this was the first time I had ever participated as a member of the press. And I’ve never had to carry on a conversation with a musical artist and film it for the world to see. On-camera interviews are like those dreams you have where you wake up and your wearing your pajamas to work. You end up feeling completely exposed. It’s nothing like writing an article where you can pick the best parts of what the interviewee said, dress it up and make it sound perfect. On camera, you’ve gotta look good, sound good and know the right things to say.
I had an on-camera interview with Jaguares Friday afternoon and I only had an hour of preparation time. All I knew was the info my co-worker quickly tossed at me on the ride there: a) their music was filled with politically conscious lyrics b) they kind of reminded him of Antonio Banderas.
We arrived at the Sheraton, took the elevator up to the 11th floor and quickly made our way into the the press room where we picked up our VIP passes. It was a cozy suite with an an incredible view of the beach front. We picked a spot on the balcony for the interview and waited patiently for Jaguares to enter. Minutes later, Saul Hernandez, lead singer of Jaguares walked into the room and suddenly the Antonio Banderes comparison made sense. The man was tall, fashionable and had perfect hair with a Spanish accent that could melt hearts. He also had the exact same pair of white Old Navy flip-flops I use as backup shoes when I wear heels from hell. I couldn’t stop looking at them.
Nevertheless, Saul was modest, articulate and a gentleman.

I think the point of the interview and the point of the entire blog is just an overview of pop music from around the world. For more in dept information why not try the official site or one of many fan sites? This blog covers everything from Ace of Base to the Warped Tour. Great job Crystal! Keep up the great work and we’ll keep reading.
it was a nice introduction and a candid talk with saul. he seems so nice and he has a lot to say.
NO COMPARISON to Antonio Banderas! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!
Once in a lifetime interview opportunity with one of (if not the greatest) rock band in Mexico and the questions you asked Saul from Jaguares were dull and elementary. Next time do your research and ask “meaningful” questions! At least know about their history, music and their passion! You did not even ask Saul about their Foundation and the work that they do!
The questions you asked have already been asked (and answered) a million times over the past 20 years of their rock history together.
