Do cellphones ruin concerts?

May 16th, 2008, 12:34 pm by Crystal Olvera

I came across this article on the wire from The Dalls Morning News that asks if cellphones are ruining the concert experience. Apparently, several artists have spoken out about cellphones becoming an evil tool that seems to be taking attention away from their performances. Here’s an excerpt:

As more and more concertgoers fiddle with cell phone cameras and fidget with BlackBerries, some people say mobile technology is ruining the concert experience.
“It’s extraordinarily irritating,” says Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame. “All these people holding up these horrid little squares of bright light.”
“It’s like they’re not even there,” says jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. “It’s like, ‘Why don’t you put that away and listen to the music?’”

The article goes on to explore both sides of the issue as well as the history of concert-going. Read the full article here.

My question is, do these artists realize that we have paid often more than a hundred dollars to see theirconcert.jpg show? Is it wrong for us to want to capture an event in our lives that might be the most spectacular experience we’ve ever had? Performers should be flattered that we’re not only giving them free promotion by being fans but by also spreading their image all across the Internet to our friends and people who probably never even knew they existed in the first place. We are the only reason you probably exist in the music world. We’re taking pictures, calling friends, and taking video of your shows not to make you uncomfortable, no sir, we’re there because we frikkin’ love you! So stop being a bunch of whiney pre-madonnas and accept the world for what it is. Your music, your performance, that very emotional acoustic version of that song we listened to as a child is something we want to remember for the rest of our lives. So when I call my mom up so she can listen to a few seconds of your song, I’m not worrying about being rude, I’m thinking to myself, ‘Oh lord! This is amazing!’ Believe me, we’re paying attention. Would we really go to not? I think you should be more worried about seeing no cellphones in the air, because chances are, it means no one gives a crap.

Kanye West Glow in the Dark Tour

May 6th, 2008, 1:40 pm by Crystal Olvera

By now, if you frequent the blogosphere, you’ve probably heard about Kanye West’s tirade against Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Willman and his review of West’s Glow in the Dark tour. He gave West a B+. Now, for those of you who know of the Grammy-winning rapper, you know that he odesn’t settle for a merely a passing grade. Mr. West needs to be at the top of his class.glowin-the-dark.jpg

The rapper is notorious for his ego, but that’s what is so likeable about the guy. I truly believe it’s all part of a gimmick he uses to create controversy and that deep, down inside is an inner dork who loves playing Connect Four (which we’ve already had proof of.) He spends most of his time posting pictures of sofas and architecture on his blog. The guy is harmless. He’s just a dork disguised as a jerk.

Anyway, West went on to tell EW they weren’t invited to anymore of his shows (LOL!) Days later, at his Houston gig at the Woodlands Pavillion in Houston, Kanye received more criticism after cursing onstage when confronted with technical difficulties. He, again used his trusty blog to address the matter as well as his EW comments.

Now, all is well in the world of Kanye, hopefully.

I’m happy to say that the Dallas show at show at the Superpages.com Center went off without any problems and a drunken good time was had by all.

Even though the opening acts may look more lively with the conventional band set up, back-up singers and entourage, Kanye still managed to dazzle the crowd all on his own, along with his talking spaceship. Like a hip-hopera, with transitions and dialogue, Kanye told his story to an energetic Dallas crowd. And yeah, some of it was a bit cheesy and melodramatic, but the superstar rapper made up for it with a catalogue of party anthems. From “Good Life” to “Flashing Lights” to the sentimental, tear-jerking “Hey Mamma,” Kanye delivered with a vivid kaleidoscope of lights and a passionate performance. (I’m serious. I hadn’t had this much fun since M.I.A. at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. We were on our feet puttin’ our hands up in the ayah the entire time like a bunch of groupies.)

Rihanna gave us the best of hit album “Good Girl Gone Bad” as well as early hits “Pon de Replay” and “Unfaithful” –
a song I usually despise but became a favorite after watching two grown men sway and sing along at the top of their lungs (which might be THE highlight of the entire show. Sorry Kanye.) But Rihanna fell a little short on “Umbrella.” The song just might be one of the greatest pop songs of the decade, but the performance was a bit lackluster.

kanye2.jpgN.E.R.D. pretty much got the party started with a bang and hits “Lapdance” and “Rockstar” got us bumpin’ and grindin’ like an R. Kelly video. But the highlight was new single “Everyone Nose” which I’ve prematurely dubbed as the Party Anthem of the Year. Seriously folks, just give it a listen. This song needs to kick Soulja Boy and Flo-rida in the a** pronto!
Unfortunately, we missed out on Lupe Fiasco due to our terrible sense of direction. We didn’t know where the parking lot was ok? Don’t hate!

So is there truth to the EW review? Certainly. Yes, the concert may not have reached it’s full potential, and maybe Kanye could’ve gotten Lupe and Pharrell up on stage for a rendition of “Us Placers” and sure Rihanna could’ve give us a little more “oomph,” but in the end, we did what Kanye wanted us to do, which was “Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party b***h!!”

Britney’s mini-comeback concert

May 2nd, 2007, 2:01 pm by Crystal Olvera

Britney Spears will eat your soul!!!!

britney-done.jpg

Seriously, doesn’t it look like she’s filming a Broadway version of The Exorcist? The woman looks possessed in this camera phone picture taken in San Diego last night. Britney Spears and her big brown wig decided to quench our Britney thirst with a performance at the House of Blues last night in San Diego.  The infamous pop tart decided to give her diehard fans (those that are still around) a 13-minute set that included hits “Toxic” and “… Baby One More Time.” There’s a load of shaky, grainy cell phone clips all over YouTube. Here’s one that has bits and pieces of each song. For a performance review click here. For more photos (where she actually looks human) click here.

Is it wrong that this video makes me want to listen to “In The Zone” again? I mean not that I have it or anything …

How do you spell Warped Tour? E-M-O

March 13th, 2007, 11:17 pm by Crystal Olvera

weilandemo1.jpgGet your studded belts, skinny jeans and eyeliner ready. The Vans Warped Tour has released their 2007 lineup which includes the emo-tastic sounds of Hawthorne Heights, Coheed and Cambria, Yellowcard, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and many many more. This year marks the 13th anniversary of the tour that will showcase more than 80 bands in a 45-day run. For a full-length article on the tour click here. Find tour dates at Pollstar. Oh and Velvet Revolver IS NOT playing the Warped Tour. This is just the emo-est picture I could find on the wire. But seriously? Who says Scott Weiland isn’t emo? He’s rockin’ the studded belt, mime-inspired shirt and skinny jeans. And Slash…well…he’s wearing black. He’s practically goth!

To discuss how un-emo Scott Weiland is, the very definition of emo, or how un-emo the Warped Tour is, comment below.
