Jonas Brothers cover Coldplay

September 12th, 2008, 8:11 pm by Crystal Olvera

Oh god! First Miley Cyrus covers Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and now The Jonas Brothers are covering Coldplay’s “Fix You”? This needs to stop! It’s unnerving! Next thing you know, the entire cast of “High School Musical” is going to do a pop rendition of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android”! And then all will be ruined!!!!

The expression on my face as I watch this.

The expression on my face as I watch this.

Reasons why I hate this:
1) It reminds me how embarrassed I am about loving Coldplay.

2) It makes me hate 12-year-old girls.

3) This gives The Jonas Brothers the power to rule the universe.

Miley Cyrus covers Cyndi Lauper

September 11th, 2008, 12:59 am by Crystal Olvera

As I wait out the Disney craze sweeping the country (seriously, how long will it be until it’s over?), I’m left to endure the many sad attempts at pop stardom by stars like Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens. And as much as I try to steer clear of these kids, queen bee Miley Cyrus, who remains at the top of my “must avoid at all costs before I gouge my eyes out” list (Heidi Montag is on this list, too), just keeps infiltrating my life. Everywhere I turn that big-toothed smile is baring down on me. But what’s even more of a nightmare is when the big-toothed smile is destroying songs that were a part of my childhood. Check out Miley’s version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

Scarlett Johansson does “Anywhere I Lay My Head” live on AOL

May 16th, 2008, 10:41 pm by Crystal Olvera

When I first heard Scarlett Johansson was releasing an album, I was skeptical of her talent. The only singing I’d ever heard her do was The Pretenders’ “Brass in Pocket” in “Lost in Translation.” But then she recorded a rendition of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” for an album called “Unexpected Dreams,” a collection of songs from different actors. Her voice was both eloquent and sultry and she showed a lot of promise. I myself was surprised that Ms. Husky Voice could pull off a jazzy song. So when I heard she was doing a Tom Waits album, it seemed like a huge departure. Fast forward to now. Her album “Anywhere I Lay My Head” and video for “Falling Down” are all over the Internet and she’s become the most hated actress on the Web. Her husky voice doesn’t seem to make the cut for mainstream music listeners, which is understandable. Scarlett chose to bring her voice down to her lowest octave, possibly to make it less pretty and more haggard, like Waits. However, I kind of love it and I’m still not really sure why. Perhaps it’s the imperfectness of her voice or maybe it’s because she sounds a little like Fiona Apple and Courtney Love at their most organic. Whatever it is, I think it’s not as terrible as everyone says it is and I kind of respect her for not doing a pop album like everyone else. The music sounds so rough and raw and spiritual at the same time. However, judging from messageboards everywhere, I’m certainly in the minority. Here’s a taste of what I’m talking about. Here’s “Anywhere I Lay My Head” from her AOL Live session.

Duffy covers Madonna’s “Borderline”

May 13th, 2008, 11:49 pm by Crystal Olvera

If you don’t know Duffy, chances are you haven’t been watching TV or listening to the radio. The female soul singer is like a sober Amy Winehouse with a song that might send Winehouse to “Rehab” if she wants to stay on top of the female, British soul-singer pack. Her single “Mercy” showcases the pop diva’s unique Aretha Franklin-like vocals. Listen to her take on Madonna’s “Borderline” after the jump!

New Video: “Just” Mark Ronson (the Radiohead cover)

January 31st, 2008, 11:03 am by Crystal Olvera

I believe this is the second video for this Mark Ronson cover — the first being a video to promote the Radiohead cover album “Exit Music: Songs with Radio Heads.” While the first had some awesome animation in it, this one has five Marks along with

So I think it’s pretty obvious from my previous posts that I’m in love with Rihanna’s mandy.jpg“Umbrella.” I know, I know. Enough already! Right? But I couldn’t not post Mandy Moore’s cover! Listen to it here. Seriously, doesn’t it make you want to tear up? The angelic Mandy can’t seem to do any wrong!
