Fugly Album Art: Ashlee Simpson

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 by Crystal Olvera

I think I’m going to start a weekly “Fugly Album Art” feature because I’ve been coming across some pretty terrible album sleeves lately. Take a look at Ashlee Simpson’s cover art for her new album “Bittersweet World.” This looks like one of those cheap wallpapers offered at an unofficial Ashlee Simpson fansite — the ones created by 12-year-olds with an old version of Photoshop on their dad’s computer. I understand Simpson is going for an 80s vibe on her new record, but I think it could’ve been done in a more creative way without looking like a 10-minute project. Ashlee looks homeless and the font looks like the one spray-painted on the wall a few blocks from my house.

Kanye West, Chris Martin “Homecoming” stills

Friday, March 7th, 2008 by Crystal Olvera

Kanye just posted a few screencaps from his new video with Coldplay’s Chris Martin for “Homecoming” on his blog. The song is one of my favorites from “Graduation.”

Looks like Kanye went back to Chi-town for a real life homecoming of his own. I don’t know if I dig the black and whiteness of it all, but I’m glad Chris made an appearance. He’s a big part of the song. I hope we get to see a live performance from both to promote the single.

Keith Richards for Louis Vuitton

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 by Crystal Olvera

Keith Richards is in a new Louis Vuitton ad. All I can think about when I look at this is the fact that the man is 64 years old. He’s 3 years younger than my dad and my dad looks 10 years younger than he does. Even photoshop can’t help the man.

Britney Spears on the cover of Rolling Stone

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 by Crystal Olvera

britneyrs.jpg

britneyrs21.jpgEven though Britney Spears has managed to grace thebritneyrs11.jpg cover of every single magazine in probably the entire world, Rolling Stone’s eerie black and white cover seems to capture the downfall of America’s biggest star perfectly. The magazine calls the once-pop princess an “American tragedy” — something usually reserved for dead rock stars or horrific events. Every time I glance at it, I expect to see 1981-2008 written underneath her name.

I’ve been a big fan of Rolling Stone covers, mostly because they manage to capture an actor or musician’s personality in a creative way that accurately defines them. Even though the magazine has changed a lot over the past few years — moving britneyrs302.jpgfrom authentic artists to talentless pop icons –every now and then they get it right. I’m not saying that this cover is perfect. All they did was recycle an old picture of the Britster. In fact, I kind of hate it. It seems like Rolling Stone took note of the reports on how well the celebrity tabloid industry is doing. They’ve realized that they can only ignore the cash cow for so long and finally opted to leave all dignity behind (whatever dignity that was left) and jump on Britney’s crazy train to hell with thebritneyrs301.jpg rest of the US Weeklys and OK Magazines of the world. They also may have felt a bit defeated after Blender beat them to the punch.

But nevertheless, exploitation for profit aside, I love the cover, too. The britneyrs41.jpg expression on Britney’s face seems to communicate a cry for help. Instead of placing a trashy photo of her flashing her crotch with words like “BASKET CASE” plastered all over it, Rolling Stone went all serious and artsy on us and I like that. I guess what I’m trying to say is I never thought I’d see a tasteful cover of Britney Spears throughout all of the hoopla but here it is. Someone finally took Britney seriously, as far as covers are concerned. Because, as much as we enjoy reading about the mess that her life has become, we often forget that’s she’s human as well. (Wow, Rolling Stone, it’s really working on me.) But most of all, it shows us just how far she’s fallen in such a short time. The once charismatic pop princess with the heart of gold has now become the most profitable tabloid soap opera ever. I’m curious to see whether Time Magazine will pick up on this. I mean, they shouldn’t be far behind, right? I can see it already — maybe a side profile of Brit-brit gazing into the sky. Let the exploitation continue!

Update: I totally spoke too soon.

Update: And if you want to have a laugh about it.

50 Cent wants to hang out with DeNiro

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 by Crystal Olvera

After 50 Cent and Robert De Niro posed on the cover of Vibe to promote their new movie “Righteous Kill,” the rapper spoke up about his experience working with the living legend. AP reports:

50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, says he’d “hang out with Robertvibe.jpg on Thursdays and Fridays” if he could.
“His celebrity is so strong that I get a chance to feel like a normal person for a little bit,” the 31-year-old rapper tells Vibe. “People get nervous around him. We had a table read, and it was amazing because there were people who came in who were like, all recognizable faces … and Robert comes in and Al comes in and it’s almost like, their knees are going shaky under the table. It’s great.”

Like De Niro would really make time to hang out with 50 on Thursdays and Fridays!
