a Notorious B.I.G. 5-button set at the Hot Topic in Brownsville.

I tried to make sense of this finding, but all I could do was stand there and stare at the rare piece of merchandise. It was like finding a poncho at Victoria’s Secret. No, it was like finding a chainsaw at Bed Bath & Beyond. You get the point. Since when is Biggie Smalls goth, emo or punk? The buttons seemed out of place next to the black and white skull arm warmers and the Slipknot chain wallet.

I came up with a few possible reasons that may have lead this piece of hip hop paraphernalia into this department store of darkness.

1) When they ordered the merchandise they thought they were ordering buttons with images from that Alfred Hitchcock movie, “Notorious,” which is pretty goth.

2) Hot Topic adopted the punk rock ideal of being anti- everything. So by not being punk rock the store was totally being punk rock.

3) Same scenario as #1 only with “The Notorious Bettie Page” movie.

4) Biggie is black and that’s goth.
