I interviewed Alejandro Rosso from Plastilina Mosh over the phone exactly a week ago. For the most part, he was as serious as artists get, commenting on the state of music, it’s predictability and his philosophy behind Plastilina Mosh’s sound. For such a fun band, he seemed almost uptight. But as I stepped into the interview area at Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island Friday night, I realized Rosso was by far, the least uptight person there.
The band’s popularity is no joke. They were and still are gigantic in Mexico and they’ve worked with high-profile producers and recently performed with Hilary Duff at the Los Premios MTV Latinoamerica. But Alejandro Rosso and Jonas couldn’t stop joking in front of the various cameras shooting their interviews. When it came time for me to ask them a few questions, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to be as energetically hilarious as they were, but I was able to pull through. The band is pure entertainment. From the interview to the stage, the group is like a bunch of hyper-active teenagers.
Even if there were only a few people who filled the venue, the party was on stage with Plastlina Mosh. With a drummer, two additional guitarists (one with an uncanny resemblance to The Edge) and a dancer (yes, they hired some 250 lb guy to dance to every single song) Plastilina Mosh might be one of the most entertaining bands I’ve seen. They’re a disco band, a rock band, a punk band, a rap group and a reggae ensemble all at once. Their setlist included “Mr. P Mosh,” “Te juro por Madonna,” “Human Disco Ball,” and “Nino Bomba” as well as a cover of 2 Live Crew’s “Me So Horny.”
